What Is Skin Rejuvenation and How Does It Work?

Skin aging can be difficult to deal with, particularly when you’re doing your best to minimize the visible signs of aging. When over-the-counter anti-aging products fail to produce the results you’re looking for, it may be time to seek alternative treatments. For example, at Bala Aesthetics And Medispa in Bel Air, MD, we know that skin rejuvenation treatments with energy-based systems can transform your skin and restore your youthful appearance.

What Is Skin Rejuvenation and How Does It Work?

At our clinic, our preferred method of skin rejuvenation is ClearLift, the latest technological advancement in rejuvenation science. This is a nanolaser system that gently resurfaces and restores the skin. This treatment is capable of taking years off your overall appearance and can produce results similar to a facelift for people who have mild skin laxity or fine lines.

ClearLift is a non-ablative treatment that essentially remodels the sub-dermal layers of the skin by penetrating the skin layers into the deepest tissues to stimulate collagen production and cellular turnover. As an ablative treatment, this nanolaser system will not harm the surface of the skin, so it isn’t a traditional rejuvenation treatment that will exfoliate the surface skin layer. However, the rejuvenation of this treatment is complete and works from the inside out to drastically improve your appearance.

Treatment Areas

This unique nanolaser system can be used on the face, neck, and upper chest to address visible signs of aging, such as skin laxity and dark spots. As an alternative treatment to a traditional facelift or other ablative laser treatments, this laser system can be used on various areas of the face with ease, including the most sensitive or small areas. This includes treating skin laxity in the area around the eyes and mouth, such as for:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Laugh lines
  • Perioral lines

This nanolaser treatment can be used to treat other superficial concerns related to aging, such as broken capillaries, dark spots, and some forms of sun damage. As a treatment that combines aesthetic resurfacing with cosmetic surgery, you can gently and effectively rejuvenate the overall appearance of the skin with a single system.

Treatment Session

In general, you can expect this treatment to take about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Like some other aesthetic treatments, this treatment can be performed in the middle of the day, such as during your lunch hour, and will allow you to return to work without any significant restrictions. Because this treatment is non-ablative, it’s very comfortable for the skin – in fact, cooling gels or topical numbing ointments typically aren’t used for this treatment.

Before the nanolaser device is used on your skin, your skin will be cleansed to remove any dirt, make-up, or oil, as well as to give the laser system a clean canvas to work with. From then, it’s only a brief period where the system is applied to your skin, emitting a gentle heat that kickstarts the internal rejuvenation process. After your skin is treated, you can apply SPF or moisturizer and go back to work.

Preparation

Although this is a non-ablative laser treatment, there are still several steps you will need to take to prepare for your treatment. Many of these instructions are designed to help your skin be less sensitive to light so that your results can develop as desired. For example, you will be instructed to stop tanning, using self-tanning products, and going outside without SPF for at least two to four weeks before your treatment.

You may also need to stop using certain products, such as retinoids, and certain medications, like antibiotics. Both of these products can cause photosensitivity, so they should be avoided at least two weeks before your treatment. If you have a cold sore breakout within one to two weeks before your treatment, you may need to postpone your appointment.

Aftercare

After your appointment, you will not have any recovery time and you will be allowed to return to work. That said, there are some things you may want to do to soothe your skin and encourage the best possible results from your treatment. You should keep your skin dry for at least 24 hours, as well as avoid hot water, steam, scrubbing, and the use of chemical exfoliants. After 24 hours, you should be able to use gentle cleansers with tepid water and simple moisturizers, like CeraVe or aloe vera.

During the next two to four weeks after your treatment, you should always wear SPF 30 or higher when you plan to be outside. You should wear SPF even if you are not outside for long periods or if you are sitting near a window; sunscreen should even be applied on overcast days to protect your skin from damaging UV rays.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

One of the biggest benefits of this treatment is the fact that you will see results in as little as one appointment. However, the results of this treatment tend to look best when you have consecutive treatments to adequately treat each of your aesthetic concerns. Most people will have a round of three to five initial appointments spaced one month apart to achieve initial results. If you have moderate to severe aesthetic concerns, you may require additional treatments.

How Soon Will You See Results?

Most people will begin to see the initial results of this treatment system within about one month. These results will gradually improve as you have more treatments. Your final results will usually be visible four to six weeks after your final appointment, or about six months after your first treatment. Of course, if you do well to prepare your skin and follow the recommended aftercare steps, you may see results more quickly. People who have mild aesthetic concerns may also see treatments more quickly.

How Long Do Results Last?

While this treatment is highly effective for rejuvenating the appearance and texture of the skin, the results of this treatment are only temporary. Most people will be able to enjoy the results of this treatment for up to 24 months, which is a similar timeframe as many dermal fillers. Although a traditional facelift surgery may produce results that last for five to 10 years, the ClearLift system can mimic these results without any pain or downtime. So even though the results won’t last as long, the overall non-invasive process of this system is preferable for most patients.

How Can You Maintain Results?

There are many ways you can maintain the results of your treatment. The most important way you can maintain your results is to prevent rapid skin aging, which means applying sunscreen protection every day to shield your skin from UV damage that causes premature cellular breakdown associated with visible aging.

Another way you can maintain the results of your treatment can be by using high-grade anti-aging skincare products to slow the aging process down. Products containing retinol, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide are all good options to promote more youthful-looking skin. Other methods to maintain your results may include:

  • Limiting stress
  • Drinking water
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Using additional aesthetic treatments

What About Other Rejuvenation Treatments?

ClearLift is far from the only skin rejuvenation treatment commonly used to refine the appearance and texture of the skin. There are several other options to rejuvenate your skin, which can be used as part of your ClearLift treatment plan or can be used in between treatments to maintain your results. For example, chemical peels are highly effective treatments you can have a few times a year to maintain even skin tone and good skin health.

Some patients who are dealing with more pronounced volume loss, such as in the cheeks, may like to use dermal fillers to restore the volume of the skin or even contour areas of the face. Neurotoxin injectables can relax dynamic wrinkles, which can’t always be treated with laser systems. You can also use other aesthetic treatments to address specific skin conditions, such as rosacea. Please discuss all your aesthetic concerns so we can help you create a treatment plan customized to your unique needs.
