What Is the Best Age for Getting Dysport?

If you’ve been experiencing lines or wrinkles on the face and would like to regain your healthy, youthful appearance, Dysport is a safe, highly effective treatment that may be able to help. Minimally invasive and administered here in our office at Bala Aesthetics and Medspa in Bel Air, MD, this anti-aging therapy has both corrective and preventative benefits, making it suitable for adults of all ages.

What Is the Best Age for Getting Dysport?

While there is no specific age that’s best when it comes to receiving these treatments, starting in your early 30s or before then is ideal if your goal is to prevent lines and wrinkles before they first appear. If you already have wrinkles or are older in age, existing wrinkles can still be treated, and you may still be able to prevent those that haven’t developed yet.

This neurotoxin is capable of preventing fine lines and wrinkles at any age because of its effects on muscles, collagen, and the fact that long-term, regular treatments often lead to gradual improvements in muscle tone. As you get older, lines can become deeper within the skin, but this therapy can often prevent this process or halt it after it’s started by training the muscles to relax and by boosting collagen production after it’s slowed down due to aging.

How Does This Treatment Work?

Dysport is a form of skin therapy that targets skin issues by reducing nearby muscle contractions. These types of skin issues come about from aging, when the body starts to produce less elastin and collagen over time, which are fibers that help give the skin its tight, healthy appearance. Adding to these issues is an increase in muscle tone, where wrinkles and fine lines become more noticeable because of nearby muscles contracting whenever we make facial expressions.

By reducing muscle contractions, this treatment can lessen or completely diminish the appearance of these skin issues while also helping to prevent future lines and wrinkles from developing. As one of the most popular and regularly used treatments for both expression lines and wrinkles, Dysport has been shown to be an efficient, safe, and thoroughly tested approach to improving one’s looks.

Your Initial Consultation

While the treatment process is normally a very quick one and most patients see results just a few days afterward, we’ll typically carry out a consultation beforehand where the following things will normally be discussed:

Current Medications

There are some medications that may either affect the results of this treatment or that may increase swelling or bruising after the injections. Anti-inflammatory medications and blood thinners should normally be avoided before, during, and just after your treatment, though we recommend speaking to your primary healthcare provider before stopping them if you’re using these medications to treat a condition.

Medical History

While most health conditions won’t affect your eligibility for treatment, some are contraindicated, and we’ll want to discuss this to assess if this therapy will be both appropriate and effective for you. If you have any conditions that affect the skin or increase bleeding or bruising after tiny injections, then Dysport may not be suitable.

Prior Surgeries

Because this treatment involves injections, we will want to know about any prior surgeries you’ve had. Certain surgeries near the areas we need to treat may affect eligibility for this treatment, and if this is the case, we can explore other options for your skincare needs.

How Long Will the Results Last?

While most patients can enjoy three to four months of effective results before retreatments will be needed, the following are some things that may influence this:

Metabolism

Your metabolism can also determine how long the effects last, as the body will naturally break down this medication and remove most of it after a few months. Those who have higher metabolic rates or who are regularly active, such as athletes and those who exercise, may notice their wrinkles or lines reappearing again much sooner than those with slower metabolisms.

Amount Injected

The amount of medication we use can also affect how long the results will last. It’s always a good idea to start with a minimal amount before increasing the dosage, as this allows us to gauge how your muscles and skin type respond. During follow-up appointments, we can assess whether some muscles will need more medication or not, though even with conservative amounts, you should expect results to last at least three months.

Number of Treatments

How often you’ve been continuously treated can also affect how long results last after each appointment. Because wrinkles and lines form from the movement of muscles, and because this therapy can relax muscles, repeated treatments lead to muscles that become less tense and easier to treat. Over time, you may see more longer-lasting benefits, and it’s not unheard of for some of our regular patients to go as long as six months before they need to return for additional treatments.

Stress

This medication works by reducing the production of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. When this neurotransmitter is blocked, muscles become relaxed and make fewer contractions. Stress can increase the release of acetylcholine in the body. So when this therapy begins to wear off, stress can then accelerate things by increasing acetylcholine, which can then increase muscle tone. All of this can lead to the re-appearance of prominent wrinkles again.

Smoking

Smoking can also have a major impact on skin health and can affect the texture of the skin. If you’ve been a longtime smoker, this may also affect how well this therapy works or how long the effects last. Many chemicals in cigarette smoke can lead to the degradation of both college and elastin. Essential to skin health, both of these fibers play a role in how radiant and tight the skin looks and lines can become deeper.

Zinc

There’s evidence that zinc can play a role in both the initial effects of this treatment and how long the effects last. This is because Dysport is a zinc-dependent enzyme, meaning that it needs zinc to be effective. You should therefore make sure that you’re including nutritious foods in your diet that include sufficient amounts of zinc, along with other nutrients.

How Many Times Can You Get It?

As this treatment is only a temporary solution for wrinkles, the effects are likely to wear off within four months in most cases. If you’d like to schedule regular maintenance appointments, you’ll want to do so within this timeframe. However, many of our patients have noticed residual benefits of this medication over time where muscles slowly adapt to it by contracting less when making facial expressions. So some patients may only need to return to us every six months.

If you have other areas that you’d like treated, different from those targeted during your first session, you can return at any time to have treatment performed on these. Dysport is a precise and highly targeted form of therapy, so injections in one area won’t normally affect those in another.

What Are the Benefits of Dysport?

When considering different anti-aging treatments, this therapy offers the following benefits that many others don’t:

Re-Trained Muscles

One of the long-term benefits that many of our patients experience with this treatment is the natural relaxation of muscles as they become trained to contract less with facial expressions. This often leads to longer-lasting results after each treatment session over time.

Smoother Skin

This neurotoxin can stimulate your body’s natural collagen production at treated sites, which is what gives your skin much of its supple texture and healthy appearance. This, along with a reduction of muscle activity, can lead to smoother skin, fewer wrinkles or lines, and can prevent some current skin conditions from worsening.

A Safer Option

Dysport is known as a temporary, low-risk solution that can be regularly administered multiple times throughout the year. Because the results typically wear off after several months, it can be much safer than other treatments where results are often permanent.
